How Credit Card Reward Points Actually Work in India

Demystifying reward points, cashback, miles, and point values. Learn how to calculate the real value of your credit card rewards.

You swipe your credit card, earn "reward points," and feel good about it. But do you actually know what those points are worth? Most people don't — and that's exactly what banks are counting on.

Let's break down how reward points really work in India, and how to squeeze maximum value from every rupee you spend.

Types of Credit Card Rewards

Indian credit cards typically offer one of three reward structures:

1. Reward Points (RP)

The most common type. You earn points per ₹100 or ₹150 spent. The catch? Point value varies wildly depending on how you redeem them.

| Redemption Method | Typical Point Value | |---|---| | Product catalogue | ₹0.15 – ₹0.25 | | Amazon/Flipkart vouchers | ₹0.20 – ₹0.30 | | Air miles transfer | ₹0.30 – ₹1.00+ | | Statement credit | ₹0.15 – ₹0.20 |

⚠️

Never redeem points from the product catalogue. The markup is insane — a ₹500 item might cost you 5,000 points that are worth ₹1,500 if transferred to miles.

2. Cashback

Simple and transparent. You get a percentage back as a statement credit. No catalogues, no transfer partners, no mental math.

  • Flat cashback: Same rate everywhere (e.g., 1.5% on all spends)
  • Category cashback: Higher rates on specific categories (e.g., 5% on groceries, 1% on everything else)
  • Capped cashback: Many cards cap cashback at ₹500-1000/month — always check the fine print

3. Miles / Air Points

Premium cards earn airline miles directly. These are most valuable for frequent travellers who can redeem for business class flights, where the value per point can exceed ₹1.

The Reward Rate Formula

Here's how to calculate the real value of any credit card's rewards:

Effective reward rate = (Points per ₹100 × Point value in ₹) / 100

Example: HDFC Infinia

  • Earns: 5 RP per ₹150 spent = 3.33 RP per ₹100
  • Point value (via SmartBuy flights): ~₹0.50
  • Effective rate: 3.33 × 0.50 / 100 = 1.67%

Example: Axis Atlas

  • Earns: 5 EDGE Miles per ₹200 = 2.5 miles per ₹100
  • Mile value (via Vistara/Air India transfer): ~₹0.75
  • Effective rate: 2.5 × 0.75 / 100 = 1.88%

Maximising Your Rewards

1. Use the Right Card for Each Category

Don't use one card for everything. Stack cards by category:

  • Online shopping: Amazon Pay ICICI (5%) or SBI SimplyCLICK (10X on partners)
  • Dining: Axis Flipkart (4% on Swiggy/Zomato) or HDFC Millennia (5% on dining apps)
  • Fuel: IndianOil Axis (up to 16X on fuel) or HPCL HDFC
  • Travel: Axis Atlas or HDFC Infinia for miles

2. Time Your Big Purchases

Banks run bonus point promotions — often 5X or 10X on specific portals. Keep an eye on:

  • HDFC SmartBuy (flights, hotels, gift vouchers at 10X)
  • Axis Edge Rewards Store
  • SBI Rewardz portal

3. Never Let Points Expire

Most banks expire points after 2-3 years. Set a calendar reminder to redeem before expiry.

4. Transfer to Airline Partners

If your card supports mile transfers (HDFC Infinia, Axis Atlas, Amex Platinum), this almost always gives the best value — especially for business class redemptions.

Common Reward Traps to Avoid

  • Overspending for rewards: Earning ₹150 in cashback doesn't justify spending ₹10,000 you didn't need to
  • Annual fee vs rewards: If a card has ₹5,000 annual fee, you need to earn more than ₹5,000 in rewards to break even
  • Minimum redemption thresholds: Some cards need 2,000+ points before you can redeem anything
  • Capped categories: "5% cashback on groceries" might be capped at ₹500/month — that's only ₹10,000 in grocery spending
